Area firefighters are battling a line of grass fires at this hour that ignited along U.S. Interstate 80 Saturday evening between De Soto and West Des Moines, according to public service radio traffic.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s office 911 dispatch center began receiving a flood of calls about 6 p.m. that reported grass fires burning about every half-mile between the 111 and 117 mile markers of westbound U.S. Interstate 80.
Fire departments responded from Adel, De Soto, Earlham, Van Meter and Waukee and the Iowa State Patrol, according to public safety radio traffic. The fires were largely extinguished by about 6:30 p.m.
