The supercharged Raccoon River has risen nearly to the bridge on U.S. Highway 169 on the north side of Adel and has flooded the roadway south of the bridge. A detour has been established by the Iowa DOT.

U.S. Highway 169 is closed to through traffic south of Iowa Highway 44 and north of U.S. Highway 6 as a result of seasonal flooding of the Raccoon River in Adel.

The flood warning issued Monday by the National Weather Service (NWS) continues until midday Tuesday for the area along the river from the Greene County-Dallas County line southward to Adel.

The flood stage for the Raccon River is 15 feet. At 9:15 a.m. Saturday, the stage was 18 feet or 3 feet above flood stage. The NWS said moderate flooding is occurring, with many rural roads affected as well as U.S. Highway 169 on Adel’s north side.

The Iowa Department of Transportation has established a detour around the flooded roadway.

Travelers are also reminded road work on U.S. Highway 169 between Bouton and Ogden begins Monday and will continue through the end of August. The 14-mile stretch of roadway will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the project.

The DOT recommends northbound motorists use the following detour route: Iowa Highway 141 east to Woodward, Iowa Highway 210 north to Madrid and Iowa Highway 17 north to U.S. Highway 30.

Nick Eakins, front desk clerk at the Hotel Pattee in Perry, said several travelers have mentioned the troublesome detours.

“I’ve had two different but both very disgruntled guests on account of U.S. 169,” Eakins told ThePerryNews.com said Saturday afternoon. “They both said the same thing: ‘We’ve had a very difficult day.’ We’re essentially cut off from the north and south unless you are intimately familiar with the backroads.”

ThePerryNews.com will update this story as information becomes available.
