Some 29 vendors of disability services attended the Heartland AEA Transition Resource Fair Monday at PHS.

Perry High School hosted the Heartland Area Education Agency Transition Resource Fair for the first time Monday evening in the PHS gym.

For five years in a row, the Transition Resource Fair has been held in the middle of April at various Dallas County school districts, such as Waukee or Van Meter. The fair is scheduled to take place in a different Dallas County school district every year.

The goal of the Transition Resource Fair is to help students with disabilities find the resources they need to prepare for life after high school. Advisors were on hand to recommend vocational resources, assisted living, college opportunities, state and county resources, assistive technology, financial resources and others.

“Our goal is to have 70 to 100 people attend each year, and we normally make it,” said Rhea Wright, education consultant at the Heartland AEA and one of the organizers of the fair.

Those attending had the opportunity to meet with 29 different vendors from various schools and apprenticeships, such as the Des Monies Area Community College, Iowa Apprenticeships and the Area Education Agency.

“The Transition Fair was an especially important for Perry because in services for individuals with disabilities, we are often overlooked,” said T. J. Maylum, a special needs teacher at PHS.
