Perry High School senior Luke Holtorf delivered a special report Tuesday to the members of the American Legion Post 85 in Perry.

Holtorf’s presentation covered his experiences at the week-long American Legion Boys State retreat held at Camp Dodge in Johnston, where he represented Perry’s American Legion Post at the annual event.

Lessons in local, county and state government made up part of the Boys State experience, with guest speakers from local and state law enforcement helping to round out the curriculum.

Campaigning and staging mock elections for local and state offices are regular features of Boys State. Holtorf was elected mayor and got a first-hand taste of municipal government.

The PHS senior said the group of young men came from all over Iowa and were kept busy from morning to night with activities, including various sporting events.

Past Commander Mike Kelley of the American Legion Post 85 in Perry said the post, with the assistance of Perry High School counselors, interviews and sponsors a young man every year for the Boys State event.
