The American Legion Post 85 of Perry announced Monday its 2018 selection for American Legion Hawkeye Boys State:  Luke Holtorf of Perry.

Holtorf is the son of Ms. Rhea Wright. The Perry High School junior has a current course load British literature, chemistry, advanced placement U.S. history, probability studies, international law and human resource aspects of business management.

Holtorf keeps physically fit, including weightlifting, football, wrestling and track. His other extracurricular involvement includes the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Perry High School Students Activities Council.

This year the week-long American Legion Hawkeye Boys State event will again be held on the grounds of Camp Dodge near Johnston. This is the 79th annual meeting of American Legion Hawkeye Boys State.

“During the week, the boys attend presentations involving different aspects of local, county and state government,” said Mike Kelley, past commander of Perry’s American Legion Post 85, “and they experience campaigning and running for various positions in government. In short, the boys will experience democracy in action.”

Selection of candidates for Hawkeye Boys State is a joint process involving members of American Legion Post 85 and the Perry Activities Department of Perry High School. Funding for the annual attendance of candidates is made possible by American Legion Post 85 and various donations made to the post during the year.
