Applications for help with winter’s high heating costs will be accepted from Nov. 1, 2018, until April 30, 2019, from all Dallas County residents who qualify.

Households with income at or below 60 percent of the state median income might be eligible.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income Iowans, both homeowners and renters, by paying a portion of their residential heating costs during the winter heating season.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program designed to assist low-income families meet the cost of home heating by providing a one-time payment to the heating utility.

The program is not designed to pay a household’s total energy cost, according to the program guidelines, but to provide supplemental assistance based on several factors, including total household income, household size, dwelling type, type of heating fuel and others.

LIHEAP applications are accepted at two places in Dallas County:

  1. New Opportunities Inc. Dallas County Family Development Center, 1212 Second St. in  Perry. 515-465-5185. Hours: Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  2. New Opportunities Inc. Westview Church, 1155 S.E. Boone Dr. in Waukee. 515-478-5509.  Hours: By appointment only.

The LIHEAP supplemental assistance aims to encourage regular utility payments, promote energy awareness and encourage reduction of energy usage through energy efficiency, client education and weatherization.

In a one-step process, clients applying for this program simultaneously apply for weatherization assistance as required by state law.

Applications will be accepted on a first come-first serve basis through April 30, 2019. An applicant will need to furnish the following onformation:

  • a Social Security card or I94 card,
  • a copy of the most recent heating and electric bill, and
  • proof of all household members’ gross income for the past three months or for the past year.
