Illinois man arrested near Dexter acting oddly with long gun

Jason Eugene Sheeder, 38, of Orangeville, Illinois, was arrested Tuesday night on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.

An Illinois man was arrested Tuesday night north of Dexter after he was seen acting strangely while carrying a rifle.

Jason Eugene Sheeder, 38, of 1239 N. Sylvan Road, Orangeville, Illinois, was charged with felon in possession of a firearm.

The incident began about 9 p.m. Tuesday, when a caller reported seeing a man acting suspiciously in the 33300 block of Delta Trail in rural Dexter. The caller said the man was “armed with a long gun” and “walking down the road and hiding in the bushes and trees,” according to court records.

Dallas County Deputy Sheriffs responded and made contact with Sheeder, who said he was “carrying a long gun in a gun case because he and his girlfriend got into an argument.”

Deputies recovered the firearm, a Ruger 10-22, along with a silver case containing .22 caliber and .410 ammunition, two scopes, a red dot sight and a magazine.

Sheeder is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $5,000 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 1 in Dallas County District Court.

Sheeder was convicted of third-degree burglary in 2003 in Guthrie County District Court. He was convicted of forgery in 2009 in Guthrie County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

  1. Is there really a girlfriend? Maybe he cleans up really well, but I think there may be drugs, mental illness or both involved here, and his “girlfriend” has no idea who he is. Does he even know where he is? Or has the crazy hair just have me thinking ill of him? I’m sure he’s a witty guy and is fun to be around . . . when he doesn’t have his toys with him.
