One of the larger parades in years rolled down Willis Avenue in Perry on Independence Day, with many annual entrants remarking on what most considered a heavier-than-usual turnout of observers along the route.
Entries of all kinds — from flatbed trailers to tractors, walking groups, political candidates and parties and civic organizations — began lining up at 9 a.m. at the East Perry Plaza. The parade progressed west down Willis Avenue before turning south on skirting the edge of Pattee Park.
Large crowds lined most of the route, with spectators several rows deep in several locations.
As always, plenty of candy came flying from the passing attractions, drawing the excited scampering and collecting of youngsters along the way.
Great pictures from the parade. It was good to see the drum brigade in the parade, but what will it take to get the Perry High School marching band in the parade? It happens in Jefferson for the Bell Tower Festival parade, and it happens in Adel at the Sweetcorn Days parade. So why can’t the Perry band participate? Last year it was promised, but it didn’t happen. Very disappointing!
