An Indianola man tried to run away from an OWI investigation in Waukee late Friday but only succeeded in compounding his alleged offenses.

Robert James Hugen, 44, of 15130 88th Lane, Indianola, was charged with first-offense OWI, driving while barred-habitual offender and interference with official acts and was issued a citation for failure to obey a traffic control device.

The incident began about 11:45 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Hickman Road and Alice’s Road in Waukee, where a patrolling officer of the Waukee Police Department allegedly observed an illegal U-turn performed by the driver of a 2019 Ford Fusion with Florida license plates.

The officer initiated a traffic stop. During the course of the traffic stop, Hugen “attempted to run away from officers on foot,” according to court records. An officer pursued Hugen “a short distance” and was able to detain him “by tackling him.”

Hugen allegedly “admitted to consuming an alcoholic beverage,” and he presented with “the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath” along with “bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and difficulty with balance,” according to court records.

A preliminary breath test returned a result of .146, according to court records.
