Jayettes leave Polar Bears, Huskies in their wake

DES MOINES — The Perry swimmers posted wins in all 11 events Thursday to defeat both Des Moines North and DM Hoover in a double-dual. The format calls for each team to be timed against each opponent individually — for example, a swimmer could be first against one school and second against the other in the same race.

Perry bested North, 64-27, and Hoover, 64-31, with North a 49-31 winner against Hoover.

Emily Dowd, Maddie McDevitt, Lilly Riley and Jenna Nelson won the 200 medley relay in 2 minutes, 22.49 seconds. with the foursome of Nelson, Sophia McDevitt, Quin Mahler-Moreno and Zoe Hibbert winning the 200 free relay in 1:52.67. Sophia McDevitt, Hibbert, Riley and Mahler-Moreno beat North in the 400 free relay with a clocking of 4:07.26, with Hoover not contesting the event.

Hibbert was 1/1 in the 200 free in 2:13.41, her first varsity swim in the event. That was followed by Mahler-Moreno 1/1 and Nelson 2/2 in the 200 IM in 2:18.85 and 2:52.05, respectively.

Riley dropped .54 off her personal best to place 1/1 in the 50 free in 27.27, with Maddie McDevitt 3/3 in 32.6 while Sophia McDevitt was 1/1 in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.16.

Hibbert and Nelson were 1/1 and 2/2 in the 100 free, touching in 1:01.43 and 1:10.24, with Riley 1/1 in the 500 free in 6:04.51, a drop of 2.68 ticks off her previous personal best. Dowd was 2/2 in the event, posting a new PB of 6:43.2, a shaving of just over 11 seconds.

The McDevitt sisters swam the 100 backstroke, with junior Sophia 1/1 in 1:09.5 while freshman Maddie was third against North and second against Hoover in 1:27.67, a new PB 3.41 ticks faster than her previous best mark.

The Jayettes were 1/1 and 3/3 in the 100 breaststroke, with Mahler-Moreno winning in 1:11.67 while Dowd reached the wall in 1:38.34.

Perry will host Algona and Boone for a double-dual Tuesday at the MCB Pool before welcoming Indianola Thursday. Both meets will begin at 6:30 p.m.
