Workers constructed a concrete pathway this week around the Jim Kaufman Track at Perry High School.

Work is advancing on schedule on the half-million-dollar reconstruction of the Kaufman Track at Perry High School, Superintendent Clark Wicks told the Perry School Board at Monday’s regular meeting.

The projected completion date for the project is Aug. 20.

“They’re still looking at the last part of August or early September to have it done,” Wicks told the school board.

The school board awarded the track reconstruction contract in April to J. B. Holland Construction of Decorah with their bid of $393,500 along with the cement stabilization alternate for $44,000. Adding the $88,653 cost for Fisher Tracks of Boone’s polyurethane surfacing of the new track brings the total project cost to $526,153.

Demolition and site preparation was followed by reconstruction, with 12″ of cement-stabilized soil topped by 7″ of reclaimed aggregate from the old track surface. Once the new base settles, 4″ of concrete will be poured and a 2″ polyurethane surface will top the concrete.

The concrete walkway that will encircle the track was under construction this week.

The school’s original cinder track was last rebuilt 25 years ago at a cost of about $120,000 and dedicated Sept. 13, 1996, as the Jim Kaufman Memorial Track in honor of the longtime Perry teacher and coach who died while jogging in April 1995.
