Two fingers for two wins: The PowderPuff game was restarted last season after not being played since 2007, with the Class of 2018 winning as sophomores. Now juniors, they defended their title with a 28-0 win over the seniors.

The action was intense, the competition spirited and the thirst for victory evident as Wiese Park played host to the Perry PowderPuff Flag Football Championship Sunday.

The game had not been played since 2007 until it was resumed last year. In the resumption of the game, it was the Class of 2018, wearing sophomore white, who prevailed over the seniors, 7-0, for the championship after blanking the juniors, 14-0, in the semifinals. The Queens of Defense ruled again this year, with the now-juniors defeating the sophomores, 21-0, in the semifinals before topping the seniors, 28-0, for bragging rights. The Class of ’18 has now outscored their schoolmates by a combined 70-0 in their four games.

The seniors had advanced to the championship with a 14-0 win over the freshmen. The consolation semifinal between the frosh and soph classes was a low-scoring affair, with the sophomores winning, 7-0.

The students collected canned items throughout the afternoon, which will be donated to the PHS Food Pantry. Student leaders wished to thank the McCreary Community Building and the Perry Parks and Recreation Department for their part in helping the games be played with the free use of footballs, flags and other equipment as well as chalking the field.

This year the male students played in the first “Iron Man” sand volleyball contest, which was also held at Wiese Park, and, just as in the PowderPuff title tilt, it was the juniors who prevailed by defeating the seniors for the class crown.

Although Perry High School was not involved in the game in any kind of official capacity, the students involved clearly see the game as the kick off to a week of Homecoming celebrations, leading to Friday’s football game against Gilbert.

“Hawaiian Luau” was chosen as the theme for Homecoming this year. Students are encouraged to dress in Tie-Dye or neon colors Monday, in tropical attire Tuesday and in a “throwback” style Thursday. Wednesday will be the annual Volunteer Day, in which students and faculty chaperones will fan out across the community to perform any number of worthy projects.

The Perry Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the first Homecoming Parade since 2007 Wednesday at 6 p.m. The parade will begin at PHS and travel west down Willis Ave before turning north on Second St. and continuing to the post office.

The annual Homecoming King and Queen coronation and pep rally will be held Thursday in the PHS gym at 8 p.m. with a bonfire to be held at the Perry Athletic Complex immediately following.

Friday will see students wear their class colors (frosh-red, soph-white, junior-black, senior-blue) and attend Game Day activities at Dewey Field at 1 p.m. The Homecoming Dance will immediately follow the football game.

Junior Syd Guerra took the opening kickoff of the title game against the seniors and nearly returned it for a touchdown, only to be ruled as having stepped out of bounds on her way to pay dirt.

The juniors pulled a little misdirection magic on this play, as, after most of the team lined up to the left, quarterback Jo Diw sprinted right, outracing the defense for a touchdown.
