Melania Hernandez, right, owner of La Pasadita Mexican restaurant at 1228 Second St. in Perry, opened Saturday to rave reviews. Her modest cook, left, declined to be identified, but he makes an excellent bean burrito.

La Pasadita Mexican restaurant opened for business Saturday at 1228 Second St., the former home of El Buen Gusto, making a welcome addition to Perry’s range of dining options.

The owner of La Pasadita, Melania Hernandez, also runs the Abelardo’s Mexican Restaurant at 205 E. 14th Street in Des Moines.

“I wanted to give Perry a try,” Hernandez said Sunday. She lived in Southern California for more than 20 years before moving to Iowa, she said.

The pleasure of a full sit-down meal will have to await a future visit, but the quality of their bean burrito, taken to go, was very high and reminded one of those served many years ago at Mi Lupita in East Longo.

Hernandez’ is the first venture to succeed the popular Salvadoran restaurant El Buen Gusto, which closed last February after longtime owners Carlos and Edith Barco of Perry were voluntarily deported by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. The Barco family lived and worked for 24 years in the U.S.
