Hispanics United for Perry (HUP), the Latino- and Anglo-American community group promoting Perry’s cultural and linguistic diversity, is raising funds today for the Aug. 29 Latino Festival. Hy-Vee shoppers can each donate $1 to HUP through their Fuel Saver cards.

Daniel Rivera of Perry, HUP treasurer, said this year’s celebration is moving back to downtown Perry, with a parade and the other festivities residents have come to expect–the singing, dancing, food, inflatables and fĂștbol (soccer).

“There will also be a queen of the festival this year,” said Maritza Saldana of Perry, HUP volunteer.

“And a princess and a duchess,” said fellow HUP volunteer Lupe Polo of Perry. The queen, princess and duchess will represent Perry High School, Perry Middle School and Perry Elementary School, respectively, Polo said.

Other volunteers at today’s fundraiser include Amanda Thomason of Perry, Ivana Santis of Perry and Mary Murphy of Perry. Jon Wolseth, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach field specialist in Latino business and community development, is also on hand, along with Perry Hy-Vee Events Manager Larry Vodenik.

The event will continue until 6 p.m.
