Mason City murder suspect taken in Kossuth County

MASON CITY, Iowa — The Mason City man wanted in connection with a homicide Wednesday was apprehended about 4 p.m. Monday in Algona.

Benjamin Bravo Gonzalez, 37, of 212 15th St. N.W., Mason City, was arrested on a Mason City Police Department warrant for first-degree murder in connection with the March 31 death of Michael Creviston, 36, of Mason City.

Creviston died of gunshots fired about 10:30 p.m. near the corner of Third Street N.W. and N. Jefferson Avenue in Mason City.

According to court records, Gonzalez “did with premeditation fire a handgun at the victim, striking him fatally in the torso.”

Gonzalez is currently being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on $1 million cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 16 in Cerro Gordo County District Court.

Gonzalez was convicted of disorderly conduct on an original charge of assault in 2007 in Cerro Gordo County District Court. He was convicted of second-offense domestic abuse assault on an original charge of domestic abuse assault with intent or displays a weapon in 2011 in Cerro Gordo County District Court. He was convicted of carrying weapons in 2011 in Cerro Gordo County District Court. He was convicted of first-offense domestic abuse assault on an original charge of third or subsequent offense domestic abuse assault in 2015 in Cerro Gordo County District Court.

The Mason City Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Iowa Division of
Criminal Investigation, the Algona Police Department, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s office, the Kossuth County Attorney’s office, the Clear Lake Police Department, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
