A child discharged a firearm in a Perry residence Monday afternoon, according to public safety radio traffic.
No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred about 4 p.m. in the 700 block of William Street.
The Perry Police Department is investigating the incident and is not releasing any information at this hour.
Two additional firearms have been found in the residence, according to radio traffic.
A record 353 people died from gunshot wounds in Iowa in 2020, a 23% increase from the previous high in 2019, according to data released this week by the Iowa Department of Public Health. The number of firearm homicides rose to 85, an 80% increase over the previous year. Suicides still made up three of every four gun deaths in Iowa.
Under the so-called constitutional-carry law that takes effect July 1, Iowans will no longer need a permit to acquire a handgun or carry a handgun in public places.

The phrase “to dodge a bullet” has real meaning here. It could have gone so much worse. This is a reason I’m an advocate for smart-locks on guns. Only the gun owner with the digital key can discharge the weapon. Someone would need to almost be in physical contact with the owner before they could pull the trigger. Unattended, the weapon would be absolutely inert. Regardless, I hope this is a wake up call for someone.
