The Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International recently bestowed their annual literacy grants. All teachers in Dallas County were eligible to apply for up to $125 for supplies to help further literacy in their classrooms.

Winners of the 2016-2017 Literacy Grant were Christina Schmitt, sixth grade teacher at South Middle School in Waukee, and Heidi Borton, second grade teacher at South Prairie Elementary in Grimes. Schmitt and Borton each received $125 for literacy supplies.

Ten educators landed $40 stipends. The winners were Linda Warman, Jen Johnson, Barb Mullenbach, Kate Virgil and Sara Schrodt, all kindergarten teachers at Brookview Elementary in the Waukee School District.

Karen Sackett, library para educator at Perry High School, and Desiree Miller, first grade teacher at Maple Grove Elementary in West Des Moines, also received $40 stipends, as did Jenna Cline and Karla Courtney, reading teachers at DeSoto Intermediate School in DeSoto, and Erica Beals, seventh grade language arts teacher at South Middle School in Waukee.

“With all the emphasis placed on the ability to read proficiently in the elementary grades, teachers are struggling to meet the needs of the diverse readers in their classrooms,” said Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter member Sue Leslie. “Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter is pleased to be able to help them meet those needs.”

The Personal Growth and Services committee, composed of Leslie, Deb Irving and Marlene Johnson, promotes this annual service project through Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter, which is made up of women educators who live or work in Dallas County.

The chapter strives to promote the professional and personal growth of women educators as well as to promote excellence in education, Leslie said.

Karla Courtney, left, and Jenna Cline, teachers at ADM’s De Soto Intermediate School, were two of the dozen winners of 2016-2017 literacy grants from the Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
