The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a winter storm watch for the Perry area from Thursday morning through late Friday night, with blizzard conditions and extremely cold temperatures likely.

Snow and blowing snow and winds gusting as high as 40 to 50 mph will produce blizzard conditions and wind chills of 20 to 40 below zero or colder across all of central Iowa, the NWS forecast.

Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility in affected areas, the NWS said, and the hazardous conditions could impact commuting and holiday travel. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 40 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as
10 minutes.

People with holiday travel interests from late Wednesday through the end of the week are strongly encouraged to pay close attention for forecast updates and be prepared to consider alternative plans, the NWS advised.

ThePerryNews.com will update this weather story as forecasts evolve.
