Panorama's Gracen Welberg makes an attempt in the high jump at W-G last season. Welberg, who competed at the state meet in the event, cleared 6 feet, two inches at an indoor meet in Lamoni Friday.

OGDEN — Panorama’s boys track team finished the WCAC meet in fifth place with 74 points, and while the result did not meet a team goal, head coach Greg Thompson found plenty about which to be positive.

“The goal for the boys was to place in the top four of the team standings, so we came up a little short,” he said. “However, 15 events were better this year than last year, we had 10 boys set 12 personal bests and also had two season best efforts. Also, we finished in the top half and up from eighth place last year.”

Van Meter won the boys crown with 135.25 points, with Madrid second at 112.25, Earlham third at 82 and Des Moines Christian fourth at 79. Panorama (74) was fifth, with Woodward Academy (61.5), AC/GC (55.5), WCV (53), W-G (46) and Ogden (41.5) rounding out the field.

Spencer Hunt was 1-2-3 in the 400, 200 and 100, respectively. He won, in 52.98 seconds, in the 400, was the 200 runner-up in 23.45, and placed third, in 11.39, in the 100.

Luke South also scored individual track points, placing fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1 minute, 0.39 seconds while crossing sixth, in 16.53, in the 110 high hurdles.

Hunt joined Tanner Godfrey, Gracen Welberg and Michael Allen in setting a new school record in the sprint medley relay, with the foursome finishing in 1:39.07.

Godfrey, Welberg, Allen and Levi Richey were fifth in the 4×200 in 1:37.05, with Richey, Danny Nordquist, Emry Colby and Zach Rizzuti fifth in the 4×800 in 9:01.74. South, Colby, Nordquist and Josh Carstens placed seventh in the distance medley in 4:07.79, with Godfrey, Welberg, South and Allen seventh, in 46.82, in the 4×100.

Dan Jensen spun the discus 143 feet, 7 inches to win the event, with the senior adding fourth-place points in the shot put with a shove of 44.9.

Also scoring in field events was Welberg, who cleared 5’8 for second place in the high jump.
