Gracen Welberg fires away for host Panorama last season. The Panthers are well ahead of their pace for total victories from last year.

PANORA — Last season the boys cagers from Panorama struggled to a 6-16 overall record, and did so having entered the holiday break at 1-7.

One year later, the Panthers are 4-4 at the break and well on their way to a strong showing for new head coach Nick Peasley.

A trio of players lead the offense with double-digit averages in scoring.

Kolby Shackelford has a 14.6 ppg average after scoring 117 points so far, with Zach Rizzuti scoring 103 points for a 12.9 ppg clip. Gracen Welberg also figures in the mix with a per-game average of 11.1 on 89 points. All three have had their moments so far in being the highest scorer in a game.

Welberg has 47 rebounds and 21 steals to his credit, with Rizzuti having cleared 44 caroms and made off with 23 steals.

Shackelford has drained 23-of-49 (46.9 percent) of his 3-pointers, with Malachi Peasley splashing 12 treys while distributing 27 assists. The team is 50-of-165 (30.3 percent) behind the arc and in 102-of-154 (66.2 percent) at the foul line.

The Panthers have also been much improved in the area of turnovers, having committed 85 in eight games, a more than survivable amount.

Panorama hosts West Central Valley Jan. 4 and then visits Woodward-Granger Jan. 8 and Des Moines Christian Jan. 11 when their season resumes.
