Parties to hold online, in-person caucuses Monday night

The Dallas County precinct caucuses will be held Monday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m., with the Democrats meeting online only and the Republicans meeting in person at their precinct locations.

Along with choosing their parties’ candidates for the primary election, caucus goers can also sign petitions and candidate nomination papers and volunteer to serve on the county central committees and as delegates to the county conventions.

The Dallas County Democrats will caucus virtually in an online-only event. Voters who pre-registered for the caucus will receive an official caucus form via email Sunday, Feb. 6 at about 7 p.m. The form will also become available for voters who did not pre-register will find a link on the Dallas County Democrats website at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The caucus form contains step-by-step instructions on how to complete and submit the form, which must be submitted by the deadline of 9:59 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7.

Democrats seeking the nomination for the U.S. Senate race include Abby Finkenauer, Mike Franken, Glenn Hurst and Bob Krause. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne is running unopposed. Deidre DeJear is seeking the gubernatorial nomination in order to challenge to Iowa. Gov. Kim Reynolds in the November general election.

Dallas County Republicans can find their precinct locations on the party’s website. Republicans residing in the three Perry precincts will meet at the Perry Middle School. Check in starts at 6:30 p.m., and the caucus starts at 7 p.m.

Incumbents Grassley and Reynolds are expected to receive their party’s nominations, although state Sen. Jim Carlin is challenging Grassley for the party’s favor in the primary. Declared Republican candidates for the Third Congressional District primary race in March include Nicole Hasso, Mary Ann Hanusa, Gary Leffler and Zach Nunn.

County-level offices that voters will fill in the November general election include the first and third district seats on the Dallas County Board of Supervisors, the Dallas County Attorney, Dallas County Treasurer and Dallas County Recorder.

The election will also see non-partisan races for the Dallas County Hospital Trustees, Dallas County Soil and Water Conservation District Commission and Dallas County Agricultural Extension Council. Retention votes for Fifth Judicial District judgeships and Iowa Court of Appeals judgeships will also be on the ballot.
