Saturday found the Freedom Rock truck parked alongside the Freedom Rock tent in Minburn, signalling that Freedom Rock artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen has begun work on the Dallas County Freedom Rock under the tent.

The Minburn American Legion Post 99 contracted with muralist of freedom Sorensen to paint the 18-ton boulder, donated by Dennis Allen of Herndon and placed in Minburn April 28, 2018.

The full Dallas County Freedom Rock project is estimated to cost $18,000, which includes Sorensen’s $5,000 fee plus lodging and materials, along with the planned landscaping and beautifying of the grounds around the Dallas County Freedom Rock.

Suggestions have been offered for figures worthy of placement on the Dallas County Freedom Rock, but the final decision is made by the artist.

Sorensen began his Iowa Freedom Rock Tour is 2013, aiming to paint a patriotically themed Freedom Rock in every Iowa county. He has completed 80 Freedom Rocks, well ahead of the 10-year timeline estimated for the statewide project.
