Officers of the Greene County Sheriff's office and Iowa State Patrol investigate the scene of a pedestrian fatality in Rippey Wednesday afternoon.

RIPPEY — A pedestrian was fatally injured here Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Second and Howard streets. The victim, whose identity has not been released pending notification of the relatives, was apparently struck by a vehicle and killed.

The circumstances are under investigation at this hour. The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m.

“At this point, we don’t know” what happened, said Greene County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams. Along with the Greene County Sheriff’s office, the Iowa State Patrol was also investigating the incident, which occurred on a shade tree-lined side street in this Greene County town of 280 people.

The Rippey First Responders, Rippey Volunteer Fire Department and Greene County EMS also responded to the scene.

A Rippey First Responder who declined to identify himself said he was the first person on the scene besides those involved.

“I know him,” the first responder said of the victim. “Everybody in town knows him.”

A looker on said she believed the victim was an elderly male but declined to state the source of her information.

The incident appeared to involve the pedestrian and a pickup truck. Law enforcement officers also appeared to be inspecting an all-terrain vehicle parked nearby.

  1. I would appreciate it if you took this down. The person who got hurt was in my family, and we want to deal with it by ourselves and not have everyone else know.

  2. I agree that the pictures don’t need to posted or should have been taken that close to the scene. If you are on my fire scene, I give one warning before you get the business end of a hose.
