Perry basketball to host cancer awareness games

Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. for tonight's varsity game between Perry and visiting Greene County at Dewey Field.

The American Cancer Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches are continuing their partnership to keep the fight against cancer in the public eye, and the Perry hoopsters will be doing their part in promoting awareness when they host Winterset Feb. 4 for a Raccoon River Conference twin bill beginning at 6 p.m.

All monies raised will be donated to the Perry Community Schools Relay For Life team.

Numerous activities will be held in conjunction with the event. PHS staff will hold a “jeans day” Feb. 4, with all money raised donated, and SkillsUSA will be providing a fundraising dinner in the PHS commons before the games. The $6 meal will include a pulled pork sandwich, chips and a drink, with $1 from each meal donated.

Fans can purchase a pink ribbon or Coaches vs. Cancer card for $1 and dedicate it to a loved one. All will be hung in the gym during the games and will also be displayed during Relay For Life.

Relay announcements will be made during the games, and a 48-second bucket drill will be held.

Coaches will wear sneakers as part of the nationwide “Suits and Sneakers” campaign, with invited guests of team members directly affected by cancer the special guests at the games. Recognition will be made of all those attending who have either been directly affected by cancer or had a loved one affected by the disease.

A raffle will also be held, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and continuing until the start of the third quarter of the boys game. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

One winner will receive four tickets and a parking pass to the Feb. 15 Iowa Wild game against the San Diego Gulls. The Wild play in the American Hockey League. The game will begin at 6 p.m. with the Eli Young Band appearing in concert after the contest.

The other winner will receive four tickets to NBA G League action March 8 when the Iowa Wolves host the Santa Cruz Warriors. The game, beginning at 3 p.m. is part of Faith and Family Day. A concert from I Am They will follow the game.
