Perry grapplers face tough field at Waukee Tournament

WAUKEE — The Perry wrestlers finished 1-4 Saturday at the Al Garrison Duals, using a last-dual victory to place third in the Bronze Bracket.

Perry was defeated, 60-19, by Johnston in their first dual before suffering losses of 45-33 to DC-G and of 50-30 to Des Moines East in pool action. A 45-19 loss to Saydel dropped Perry into the match of 15th place, which the Bluejays won with a 36-30 defeat of Chariton.

Washington won the Championship Bracket, with Johnston second, Waukee third and Millard West fourth.

Perry’s two ranked wrestlers each had strong outings, with sixth-rated Kaleb Olejniczak 5-0 at 113 pounds. The sophomore received two forfeits, but pinned Nico Garcia (SAY) in 26 seconds and Ayden Kovaleski (DC-G) in 1 minute, 40 seconds while scoring an 11-3 major decision over James Edwards (JHN) to finish 5-0.

Sixth-rated 120-pound junior Zach Thompson blew through his first four foes, pinning Jack Hutchison (JHN) in 1:28 before defeating fifth-ranked Max Tracy (DC-G), 7-3, pinning Joseph Roberts (DME) in 3:14 and posting an 18-5 major decision over Mike Moore (SAY). He stepped up to 126 to face Chariton’s Gabe Ruepke, but retired with an injury in 2:59 to finish 4-1 overall.

Sixth-ranked Kaleb Olejniczak of Perry controls Carroll’s Cade Neuman in their match at 113 pounds Thursday.

Zach Stewart’s strong season continued with a 4-1 record at 132, his lone loss an 8-4 decision to Matthew Jordan (DME), who is ranked fourth in Class 3A. Stewart pinned Jacob Majava (DC-G) in 2:57, topped Cade Moss (JHN), 6-5, and Klayton Keller (SAY), 12-11, while receiving a forfeit.

Adan Medina was 4-1 at 170 for the Jays, pinning Riley Romick (JHN) in 1:21, Thomas Shehan (DME) in 3:37 and Tommy Sommers (CHR) in 1:11 while besting Ben Fisher (DC-G) in 2:45 on an injury default.

Tyler Soll finished 2-3 at 285 with pins against Adam March (DME) in 1:34 and Jacob Comer (DC-G) in 1:07 with Kevin Lopez pinning Karter Jorgensen (DC-G) in 1:42 to finish 1-4 at 195 while Bryan Funez stuck Desean Giboo (DME) in 3:56 and was given a foreit for a 2-3 record at 145.

Tucker Strough (106), Erick Funez (152) and Carlos Calderon (220) were each 1-4, with all three receiving a forfeit for their lone victory. Justin Stammer (138) and Angel Escobar (182) were both also in action for the Bluejays, with neither tallying a victory, the former in five matches and the latter in three.

The Jays left four matches at 126 and two at 182 open during the tournament.

Perry is off until after the holiday break. They will resume action Jan. 5 by hosting Van Meter and Bondurant-Farrar for a triangular before competing Jan. 7 in the Ames Tournament.
