Jim Russell’s “Speed Train” will be followed by a fourth public artwork thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs announced Thursday.

Two lucky Perry groups learned Thursday they were among more than 200 projects to receive 2019 funding from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA).

Art on the Prairie, Perry’s signature cultural marketplace, landed $10,000 in DCA funding to pay for the Furrowed Fields Sculpture Project, the fourth of the public art pieces to be placed along Willis Avenue. According to Art on the Prairie, the public sculpture “pays tribute to the history of farming, industry and railroads in Perry.”

Perry’s other DCA winner for 2019 was the Fullhart/Carnegie Charitable Trust, doing business as Hometown Heritage. The most recent incarnation of Hometown Perry Iowa, Hometown Heritage received $5,000 in a capacity-building grant that will support ongoing operating expenses for the organization.

Additionally, popular local muralist Jennifer Drinkwater of Ames received $10,000 in the DCA’s Iowa Artist Fellowship Program. The program supports artists who demonstrate exceptional creativity and the capacity to contribute to the innovation and elevation of the arts in Iowa.

Other area beneficiaries in the 2019 granting cycle included two Guthrie County projects that also received DCA grant funds. The Guthrie County Arts Council in Guthrie Center received $5,000 to support its operations, and Project Restore Foundation in Stuart netted $3,000 for a project on world music.

The DCA comprises the Iowa Arts Council, State Historical Society of Iowa and Produce Iowa. More than $2 million in supporting funds were awarded in the 2019 grant cycle.
