Perry XC teams navigate course at Grant Woods Park

MADRID, IA — The Perry cross country teams made the journey to Madrid Thursday, where a trip around Grant Woods Park served as the three-mile course for the Tiger Invite.

Ogden won the boys side with 36 points, with Madrid clipping Perry, 63-64, for second place. Woodward-Granger was fourth at 83 and the Woodward Academy fifth at 117. A total of 78 runners were in action.

W-G (37) won the girls crown, with Ogden (41), Madrid (48) and Colo-NESCO (95) following. Perry was one of several schools that competed but did not have the five runners necessary for a team score. Thirty-nine girls ran in the varsity race.

Madrid juniors Ethan Leutezenheiser and Clay Warson were 1-2 in the boys race, in 16 minutes, 39,74 seconds and 17:07.82.

Yonas Andemichael was fourth overall to lead Perry with a time of 18:30.84, with Thad Stewart ninth in 19:16.56. Both earned medals.

Julian Guzman (11th, 19:27.66), Gannon Meis (19th, 20:31.79) and Owen Myers (21st, 20:51.24) also scored for the Bluejays. Jonathan Chavez (24th, 21:11.74) and Bryce Anliker (26th, 22:07.07) also ran but did not have scores tabulated.

Julie Maylum was the first of the four Jayettes running to cross the finish line, doing so in a medal-winning time of 23:49.3, which earned the junior eighth place. Natalie Castillo finished in 25:16.81 for 18th, and Mylah Meis in 27:21.3 for 28th, with Mercedes Ponce posting a 27:29.49 for 29th.

Perry will run at Winterset Tuesday before a visit to the Greene County Invite Sept. 10.
