Mario Cruz, Perry High School’s 2018 Homecoming King, became Perry’s newest enlistee in the Iowa Army National Guard Thursday when he took the U.S. Armed Force oath of allegiance.

“Super proud of this young man,” said Sgt. Jana DeKoter of Perry, career counselor with the Iowa Army National Guard. “He worked really hard to join today!”

Cruz enlisted as a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist and will head to training summer 2019, DeKoter said. He will also receive 100 percent state tuition assistance and GI Bill benefits.

Following training, Cruz plans to attend Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, where he will continue his standout PHS track career as an Iowa Central Triton.
