The Perry High School Academic Decathlon Team placed third overall in the small school division of regional competition and will now advance to the State Academic Decathlon Competition in Urbandale on March 3-4, the school announced Thursday.
The PHS scholars competed in the regional competition Jan. 26-27 at the Johnston High School and on Central Campus in Des Moines.
The students were first interviewed by judges and asked to present both prepared and impromptu speeches. Then followed tests in the areas of mathematics, science, social science, music, art, literature and economics.
The competition concluded Friday with a Quiz Bowl.
In the Small School Division, the PHS team placed third overall. The strong finish at regionals places them in the top 24 teams in the state — among schools of all size — and earns them the opportunity to participate in the State Academic Decathlon Competition next month.
The Perry team also earned numerous individual honors. The PHS Academic Decathlon Team includes Jefry Gonzalez, Jose Chavez, Amy Aguirre-Eugenio, Ashley Robles and Seth Borgeson.
The team is coached by Teresa Kresse and Lisa Schumacher.
