Perry High School has been awarded the 2020 School of Character Award by the Robert D. Ray and Billie Ray Center at Drake University, the Ray Center announced Wednesday.

  • Perry High School’s recognition is based upon a number of facotrs:
  • Student Activities Department Advisory Council Activities and “The Bluejay Way”
  • Homecoming Wednesday Volunteer Service Day
  • Annual Veterans Day program and assembly
  • 100+ People for Perry
  • Community and school letters of recommendation

The Robert D. Ray and Billie Ray Center at Drake University presents the Iowa Character Awards yearly, and recipients of the awards are traditionally honored at a July awards banquet on the Drake campus. Unfortunately, Drake University will be unable to host an in-person July event this year due to the pandemic.

A virtual celebration will be held in late July or early August, including the production and release of recipient videos in partnership with KDSM Fox 17. Mediacom 22 will also carry the broadcast throughout the year as they have done in the past.

In addition, the television station will host a prime-time, one-hour program Thursday, July 30 at 8 p.m. to broadcast the award recipient videos and will work with its Cedar Rapids and Sioux City affiliates to broadcast the event statewide.

When safe and appropriate, Ray Center officials will also make a hometown visit to present the award, officials said.
