Restoration efforts began this week on the 100-year-old Stokely house on Willis Avenue and Fourth Street in Perry. A March 14 fire badly damaged but did not completely destroy the old home.

ThePerryNews.com was partly wrong March 14 when we reported, “Fire destroyed the large, two-story house at 1324 Willis Ave. early Wednesday, the home of Michael and Hildie Stokely of Perry.”

As activity this week around the 100-year-old home testifies, the fire did not completely destroy the big house with the wraparound porch, and restoration is now underway.

The Stokelys have enlisted the services of Des Moines-based Iowa Demolition Inc., a division of Earth Services and Abatement, to manage the environmental remediation at the site.

The fire at Willis Avenue and Fourth Street was one of several large structures fires in Perry during the month of March. In each case, intrepid interventions by the Perry and Dawson stations of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department prevented the blazes from doing their worst.
