Perry-area ladies gathered Tuesday at noon at the First United Methodist Church for a Ladies Day Out salad luncheon, featuring ham balls, lots of salads, homemade rolls and dessert.
The ladies lunched in expectation of Motown musical maestro Maurice Jules and his “Music is the Wave of the Soul” program but, Lord Almighty, I felt the temperature rising when Elvis took the stage — or rather the altar — in a virtually miraculous appearance.
For the length of several songs, the soul of Elvis, who would now be 83, was born again in the 70-something body of Eddie Simpson of Boxholm and despite what wise men say, the lunching ladies couldn’t help falling in love.
“He did a bunch of gospel, too,” said Myrna Myno Smith of Perry, an Elvis admirer since her first youth. “He’s going to be at the Badger Lutheran Church next week. He has a gospel group that dresses up like Elvis.”
