DES MOINES, Iowa — Charges were raised to first-degree murder Friday against a Sigouney man following the death of a 4-month-old infant found seriously injured June 16.

Johnny Dale Jr., 21, of rural Sigourney was arrested Wednesday and originally charged with child endangerment resulting in serious injury in connection with harm sustained by 4-month-old Kane Bruns.

The infant’s mother found the baby boy unresponsive at his Oskaloosa home Sunday, June 16 about 10:45 a.m. The child was rushed to the Mahaska County Hospital and later airlifted to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Kane Bruns died this morning as a result of the injuries allegedly inflicted upon him by Dale, who was the primary caregiver for the child at the time of the injuries.

Dale was taken to the Mahaska County Jail when first arrested and held on a $250,000 bond. Following the infant’s death, the charge against Dale was changed to first-degree murder and the bond raised to $1 million.

The charges followed an investigation by the Oskaloosa Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
