Snow, collisions snarl traffic on Iowa highways, interstates

Monday’s heavy snowfall has caused numerous traffic accidents around the Perry area. Motorists are advised to avoid the following areas if possible.

A multi-vehicle collision on U.S. Interstate 80 south of Van Meter occurred about 1 p.m. and involved two semi-tractor trailers and eight to 10 passenger vehicles, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s office radio traffic.

Reports indicate diesel fuel from one of the semis is leaking into a nearby waterway.

The westbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 80 are currently closed, and the eastbound lanes are slow and go.

The Iowa State Patrol, Dallas County Sheriff’s office, Van Meter Volunteer Fire Department and Waukee Fire Department are responding to the incident at this hour.

In Greene County, a multi-vehicle incident on U.S. Highway 30 near Grand Junction about 10 a.m. involved two semi-tractor trailers and a pickup truck.

Injuries were reported. U.S. Highway 30 is closed in both directions.

The Iowa State Patrol, Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Greene County EMS responded.

Also in Greene County, two semi-tractor trailers collided and then struck a Iowa Department of Transportation snow plow on Iowa Highway 4 west of Cooper about 10:30 a.m.

Injuries were reported. The Iowa State Patrol, Greene County Sheriff’s office, Jefferson Police Department and Greene County EMS responded.

In Story County, a multi-vehicle incident at the intersection of U.S. Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 30 has closed the interstate in both directions.
