The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Des Moines has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for the Perry area and a wind chill watch for much of the state from Monday evening until Thursday morning.

Snow and strong winds with blowing snow will make travel hazardous across portions of Iowa into Monday. Snow is forecast to continue tonight, especially across the northern half of the state, with mixed precipitation expected across portions of central and southern Iowa late Sunday night.

Strong winds will also develop Sunday night, leading to significant blowing and drifting snow through Monday morning. Snow accumulations will likely be less than one inch, with a light glazing of ice possible through sunrise Monday.

This NWS said this storm will be followed by an extended and rarely seen outbreak of extreme cold and dangerous wind chills from late Monday through early Thursday. The wind
chill watch has been expanded and issued earlier to heighten awareness of the severity of the event, the NWS said.

Following the precipitation Sunday night will be dangerously cold wind chills starting late Monday. Wind chills as low as 50 below zero are possible in west-central and into central Iowa.

Travelers should plan on snow-covered and ice-covered roads and slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute. The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 to 10 minutes and also be life threatening.
