Solar system slowly rises in Perry skies

Most of the steel support pillars have been raised for the series of solar canopies under construction north of the McCreary Community Building.

The steel uprights now visible at several points around Perry mark the progress in construction of the system of solar panels that will soon power all city properties.

The city parking lot at the northwest corner of First and Willis avenues remains closed for installation of solar canopies and panels, and the parking stalls south of the Perry Public Library are similarly off limits.

“We’re working on the directional boring” at the Perry Public Library, Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson told the Perry City Council Monday. Electrical energy collected at the library’s canopy would be shared with the main library, Carnegie Library Museum and the Towncraft Building.

A portion of the recreational trail north of the McCreary Community Building is also blocked off as the series of canopies is erected.

Peterson said all but six of the steel support columns have been raised at the MCB.

“It looks different out there,” said Perry Mayor John Andorf.

“It does,” said council member Dean Berkland. “It will be shadier out there.”

Traffic control devices are in place to warn motorists of the closures as the contractor works in the areas. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to continue to exercise caution near the work areas.
