Cookies were far from the common treat offered to revelers Tuesday, but this little monster was just as happy to see candy filling his bucket.

Hundreds of youngsters — and a considerable number of adults — passed up and down Second Street Tuesday in their best Halloween costumes as part of the annual SPOOK-tacluar celebration, sponsored by the Perry Chamber of Commerce.

Temperatures were in the low 50s and a steady north wind blew throughout the event, which began at 4 p.m. and wrapped up at 6 p.m. The blustery conditions did little to damper the spirits of those pursuing sugary delights.

Whether called Beggar’s Night, Trick-or-Treat or simply Halloweening, the holiday has proven to be one of the most popular in the United States. Once seen as the preserve only of youngsters, many teens and an ever-growing percentage of adults now participate in the revelry, though the adults passed upon partaking in the calorie-fest.

The citywide door-to-door candy collection was held from 6-8 p.m. with many neighborhoods buzzing with activity. Some intrepid souls also stopped by the Perry Fire Association’s Haunted House for a few good-natured frights.

The Dallas County Hospital was one of several locations throughout the city also welcoming Halloweeners.
