A Dallas Center man was arrested early Sunday after crashing his pickup truck through a gazebo at Amy Gene Acres, a senior housing complex at 1107 Sugar Grove Ave. in Dallas Center.
Christopher David Hasty, 34, of 7 Prairie Lane in Dallas Center was arrested by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office on a charge of OWI.
“It’s pretty straight forward,” said Dallas County Sheriff’s Det. Adam Infante. “He was just drunk and went straight when he should have turned, and the result was the gazebo.”
Hasty drove his gray GMC pickup through three pillars on one side of the structure and destoyed fencing and patio furniture before striking a tree and finally coming to rest.
Infante said Hasty’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was almost four times the legal limit at the time of his booking.
“He blew a .294 in the jail,” Infante said. In Iowa it is illegal to drive with a BAC of .08 or higher.
It appeared law enforcement was taking statements from a group of six to eight young people at the scene at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, but Infante confirmed Hasty was alone at the time of the accident.
The Amy Gene Acres property is owned by Robert and Benjamin Fox, according to county records.
The Iowa State Patrol, Dallas Center First Responders, Dallas Center Volunteer Fire Department and Dallas County EMS also responded to the incident.
