A juvenile male who ran away from the Woodward Academy about 8:30 p.m. Sunday was taken into custody about 8:30 a.m. Monday by officers of the Perry Police Department.

It is unknown where the 17-year-old spent the night, but he was reportedly seen in or near a fast food restaurant on Iowa Highway 141 in Perry about 8:30 Monday morning. A caller said the youth appeared to be harming himself.

Officers responded and detained the runaway about 8:40 a.m. in a field south of the highway after a brief foot chase. He was taken into custody without incident.

Two friendly dogs from the local woodcutter’s property frolicked about the youth and police officers in the stubbled field.

The juvenile was transported to the Perry Police Department. According to law enforcement radio traffic, a worker with Sequel Youth Services, the for-profit company that operates the Woodward Academy, was dispatched to transport the runaway back to the Woodward campus.
