Officers of the Perry Police Department controlled the fire at 522 Third St. Wednesday night until the arrival of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department.

A house fire in the rear of 522 Third St. in Perry Wednesday about 9:45 p.m. was knocked down before it got out of control.

Quick action by officers of the Perry Police Department saved a back porch from greater damage when it caught fire about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

“The fire started with an overloaded 220-volt outlet that a dryer was plugged into,” said Perry Volunteer Fire Department First Assistant Chief Brian Eiteman. “The outlet started on fire and caught carpeting and walls on fire on the back enclosed porch.”

Officers of the Perry Police Department responded to the house fire and controlled it with fire extinguishers until the Perry Volunteer Fire Department arrived and deployed exhaust fans to clear the structure of smoke.

“There was no structural damage to the house,” Eiteman said. “It was only cosmetic. We arrived on scene to mop up the fire and evacuate the smoke from the home. No one was injured and the renter was not displaced.”

One occupant of the single-family house at 522 Third St. was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by the Dallas County EMS.

The 102-year-old, two-bedroom house is a rental unit owned by Diaz Corp. LLC, according to the records of the Iowa Secretary of State. The Diaz Corp. was administratively dissolved in August 2017 for failure to file a 2017 biennial report with the state.
