UPDATE: Urbandale man accused of killing wife

Dustin Lee Sample, 35, of Urbandale was arrested Sunday on a charge of first-degree murder.

An Urbandale woman was identified Monday as the victim of an alleged murder Saturday at the hands of her husband.

Mary Nicole Sample, 29, of 4205 90th St., Urbandale, was deceased when law enforcement arrived at the residence about 6:45 p.m. According to court records, Sample “had suffered head trauma.”

Dustin Lee Sample, 35, was charged Sunday with first-degree murder.

According to court records, Dustin Sample “called 911, stating his wife was unresponsive.”

Responding officers observed that Sample “had defensive wounds and could not say where he got them.”

According to court records, “Blood was located on the vacuum cleaner, showing there was an attempt to clean the crime scene.”

The Samples and their child were the only ones living in the home.

Sample is held in the Polk County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Dec. 23 in Polk County District Court.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting the Urbandale Police Department with the investigation.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is innocent until and unless proven guilty.
