Veterans Day in the U.S. is a day to honor U.S. military veterans.
The holiday originated in 1919 as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, hostilities ceased, and World War I ended 100 years ago today, on Nov. 11, 1918.
World War One was one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race, in which more than 16 million people died. The war killed almost 7 million civilians and 10 million military personnel. Another 20 million people were wounded, bringing the total estimated number of casualties to 37 million.
In the U.S., the name of the observance was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.
