WAUKEE — A team of Waukee students have won the Third District Congressional App Challenge for their design of a City Recycle Day app that will remind users when to take out their trash and recycling.

The app will also alert users to last-minute changes in their pickup schedules, as in inclement weather, and to special pickups.

The design team consisted of Sabarish Mogallapalli, Shriya Megatapalli, Owen Scott and Sankalp Yamasani. Third district Congressman David Young congratulated the young designers Monday in a video conference call.

“It is amazing to see what our young people can create,” Young said later. “When I was able to see what City Recycle Day can do and the time, research and effort the students put into it, I was really amazed at how well these students did.”

The students hope to work with metro cities in rolling out the garbage-and recycling app to area residents.

As a part of their Congressional App Challenge submission, the design team created a short video detailing their app. The students and their winning app will be featured on displays around the U.S. Capitol alongside winners from other congressional districts.

Now in its third year, the Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide public effort to encourage young people to learn how to code.
