A West Des Moines man was arrested Wednesday on a Dallas County warrant for allegedly felling his girlfriend with a knock-out punch and leaving her with a serious facial injury.
Israel Perez Mondragon, 20, of 3505 Woodland Ave., #39, West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault with intent to inflect serious injury.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. Feb. 16 in the 7600 block of Office Plaza Drive in West Des Moines, where Mondragon and his girlfriend had “checked into a motel room at the Motel 6, located at 7655 Office Plaza Dr., to celebrate Valentine’s Day,” according to court records.
An argument ensued, during which Mondragon allegedly “punched the victim in the face with a closed fist, knocking her out. When the victim woke up, she discovered that she was lying in a large pool of blood and upon closer examination, she discovered that the defendant had caused a large cut to the side of her cheek and/or mouth, which resulted in the victim having to go to the hospital to receive numerous stitches,” according to court records.
A warrant for Mondragon’s arrest was ordered Feb. 16 in Dallas County District Court and served Feb. 24.
Mondragon is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $5,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 5 in Dallas County District Court.
Mondragon was arrested Dec. 22, 2020, on charges of first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and obstruction of emergency communications. The case is pending in Polk County District Court.
