A West Des Moines man arrested for drunk driving in Waukee Thursday night was also found to have two loaded handguns with him.
Rodney Thomas Jones, 52, of 8601 Westown Parkway, #1, West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense OWI and possession or carrying of dangerous weapons while under the influence.
The incident began about 9:45 p.m. Thursday in the 400 block of Alice’s Road in Waukee, when a Waukee Police Department Officer made a traffic stop on a 2012 Nissan Altima, driven by Jones.
According to court records, Jones “admitted to having a few drinks earlier and had slurred speech.”
Jones refused field sobriety tests but consented to a preliminary breath test, blowing a 0.212.
During the OWI investigation, “a loaded handgun was in the front center console” of the vehicl, according to court records, and “a loaded handgun was located on (Jones’) left hip.”
Jones was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond before being released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 9 in Dallas County District Court.
