DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) assessed a $10,000 fine Thursday to the Wild Rose Casino and Resort in Jefferson as a consequence of the gaming company’s accounting errors.

Brian Ohorilko, IRGC administrator, said the problem involved free plays given to casino customers, which are taxed by the state up to a certain dollar amount. Ohorilko said Wild Rose miscalculated the amount of free plays subject to taxation.

The error caused the threshold for promotional play receipts and the resulting tax credit to be reached prematurely by all of the state-licensed casinos in Iowa, Ohorilko said.

“Even though the total dollar amount erroneously reported added up to only about $33,000, it impacted the other 18 casino licensees, and the state had to go back and collect gaming tax for each of those casinos,” Ohorilko said.
