The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines has issued a wind advisory for the Perry area to remain in effect from 3 p.m. Monday until 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The NWS predicts sustained wind speeds 30 to 40 mph and peak gusts of 45 to 50 mph. A few gusts could exceed 50 mph in far north-central Iowa, the advisory said.

Winds will diminish slightly toward daybreak Tuesday but still remain fairly strong, with gusts of 35 to 40 mph into Tuesday.

Strong northwest winds might affect high-profile vehicles, making travel hazardous. Lightweight, unsecured objects, such as Christmas decorations and other holiday items, might be blown around, the advisory said. Residents are encouraged to secure all holiday decorations.

Snow is possible, but any accumulations would be less than one inch. The wind might also combine with a brief period of snow during the early evening hours, further increasing travel hazards due more to low visibility than slick roads.
