A winter storm watch has been issued for portions of central and southern Iowa from Saturday night into Sunday night, according to the Des Moines office of the National Weather Service (NWS).

The system will bring the potential for moderate to heavy snowfall and strong winds that may result in significant blowing snow. These conditions may lead to very difficult travel conditions.

Moderate to heavy snowfall is possible, with total accumulations of of 3 to 8 inches possible, with the heaviest amounts over southern Iowa south of U.S. Highway 30.

Winds gusts in excess of 40 mph are also possible, making travel very difficult. Blowing
snow could significantly reduce visibility, with sleet and ice accumulations possible.
