Wrong-way driver charged in November death on U.S. Interstate 80

DES MOINES, Iowa — A fatal two-vehicle crash U.S. Interstate 80 in November involving an allegedly alcohol-impaired wrong-way driver resulted in an arrest Wednesday, according to a statement released by the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS).

According to the DPS, a vehicle driven by Zlatan Vukasinovic, 39, of Des Moines was travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 80 on Nov. 10, 2018, and struck a westbound vehicle head-on, driven by Franklin Sylalom, 31, of Des Moines.

The head-on crash killed Sylalom.

Vukasinovic was booked into the Polk County Jail about 11 p.m. Wednesday and is held without bond on charges of homicide by vehicle–reckless driving and homicide by vehicle-OWI.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
