HUXLEY — If there is a younger girls golf team in Iowa, Perry head coach Joel Happel would like to hear about it.

Happel sent three freshmen and a sophomore around the links at the Ballard Golf and Country Club Tuesday for season-opening quadrangular meet against host Ballard, Des Moines Roosevelt and Norwalk.

A combined score of 192 granted victory to Norwalk, with Roosevelt second at 198 while Ballard carded a 221 and Perry a 271.

“Of course we would like to see our scores be lower and they will be,” Happel said. “To tell you the truth, I was very happy with our effort today. It was cold and wet and misty and I did not hear one complaint about the weather.

“We were happy to be there and to be playing,” Happel, a club professional, added. “I like how we look standing over the ball — they look like golfers. The more balls they hit the better they will get. I see promise for all of them.”

Sophomore Sarah Sweet and freshman Hannah Roberts led the way for Perry with a team-low rounds of 65. Caley Hager carded a 66 and Skylar Cunningham a 75 to complete the Jayette scoring.

Perry will host Greene County and Des Moines Christian today in a triangular at the Perry Golf and Country Club. Tee time is set for 4 p.m.

The Perry girls will then host the Jayette Invitational Saturday, with competition beginning at 8:30 a.m. Teams from Dowling Catholic, Humboldt, North Polk, Norwalk and South Hamilton are expected to attend.
